Poppies

Poppies - Dixie & Grace

As a child, my only association with the poppy flower was the voice of the evil witch from the Wizard of Oz. It was not until later in life that I would be aware of the other stories behind poppies.

Poppies may symbolize sleep, rest and repose, however, more importantly, they represent eternal life and remembrance. The red poppy is the flower for Memorial Day.

During November 2014, over 800 Thousand ceramic poppies were installed as a remembrance to World War I at the Tower of London. Entitled Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red, the installation is the work of ceramic artist Paul Cummins, from Derbyshire.

Here is a story behind The Tower of London poppies.

This year I learned a bit more after my husband posted the poem "In Flanders Field"  by John McCrae.
